PURPOSE

To equip professionals and parents on how to support children with hearing loss to acquire and use spoken language in a mainstream school.

ADMISSIONS

Ideal candidates, are persons working in education or hearing healthcare as well as families of children with hearing loss.
Application requirements include access to a laptop (including webcam and microphone), with high speed internet. The programme is offered in English and candidates must have the ability to communicate effectively verbally and through writing to ensure successful completion of all academic activities.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE & DELIVERY

The programme consists of an online learning component with an optional 5-day face-to-face practical at the Eduplex school in Pretoria, South Africa. Online learning is completed at a self-regulatory pace.

ONLINE CONTENT

The online training focusses on the Modules of the book, Inclusive Education for Children with Hearing Loss. This book is used as it describes a model of inclusion which  is currently successfully used at the Eduplex school in Pretoria, South Africa. The book aims to empower and educate professionals and teachers through the provision of practical information about the social and academic needs of a child with hearing loss.  The information is provided in an easy understandable manner and includes interactive videos and e-learning activities.

PRACTICAL CONTENT

Upon completion of the course, delegates should be able to perform all requirements set out by the Unit Standard for performing an audiometric screening and have an acceptable understanding of:

  • Introduction to Audiology
  • Speech and language development of children with hearing loss
  • Parent guidance
  • Nature and strategies used in inclusive education (theory & practical)
  • Classroom environment adaptions
  • Multi-level teaching
  • Additional support
  • Addressing barriers to learning
  • Inclusion: extramural activities

PROGRAMME FEES

Programme fees are due at registration. Programme fees include all learning material. Optional practical will be at an additional cost.

Laptop, associated data costs as well as travel and accommodation (in reference to the practical week) are excluded.
