Occupational Vision Screening Course

PURPOSE

This competency course in occupational vision screening is hosted by Eduplex Training Institute (ETI), in collaboration with Education for Health Africa (EFHA). This Occupational Vision Screening course is designed for healthcare professionals and assistants responsible for performing vision screening tests in the occupational workplace. It aims to build competence in conducting safe and quality-assured occupational vision screening tests aligned with SAQA Unit Standard 116505.

TRAINING AVAILABLE

Training is available as a blended training format or onsite in-person training.

Blended training includes online theory sessions with a one-day practical session and examination hosted in Queenswood, Pretoria, Gauteng

Onsite training consists out of online pre-reading theory and a three-day onsite, in person training in Queenswood, Pretoria, Gauteng.

Register for the course by the 20th of each month.

Onsite in person training:

Last registration for the course is 3 weeks before the commencement of the workshop.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Vision Screening Practitioner:

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 or higher
  • Registration with relevant council (HPCSA / SANC / SAMA)
  • Access to an occupational health clinic

Assistant Vision Screener:

  • Minimum: Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
  • Recommended: Experience in occupational health setting and access to an occupational health clinic

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of the course, delegates as a Vision Screening Practitioner will be able to:

  • Perform vision screening equipment quality assurance and quality control tasks
  • Prepare for and conduct a vision test
  • Evaluate the validity of the vision test results
  • Interpret the vision screening test results
  • Record and report the vision screening test results
  • Manage the vision screening results

Upon successful completion of the course, delegates as an Assistant Vision Screener will be able to:
 

  • Perform vision screening equipment quality assurance and quality control tasks
  • Prepare for and conduct a vision screening test
  • Evaluate the validity of the vision screening test results

CERTIFICATION

On successful completion, participants receive a Certificate of Competence in Occupational Vision Screening.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

This course is intended for cccupational health nurse practitioners, other healthcare professionals and assistants responsible for performing occupational vision screening tests in the workplace. 

HOW LONG WILL I STUDY

The overall course is 80 hours long consisting of a combination of theoretical training and practical vision screening skills application

  • Training is available as a blended training format or onsite in-person training.
  • Blended training includes online theory sessions with a one-day practical session and examination hosted in Queenswood, Pretoria, Gauteng
  • Onsite training consists out of online pre-reading theory and a three-day onsite, in person training in Queenswood, Pretoria.
  • 80 hours course includes 21 hours of workplace assignments which needs to be completed to complete the course successfully.

    Who should apply?

    Professionals responsible for occupational vision screening in occupational health settings — including occupational health nurses, and any individuals who will assist in vision screening. 

    *Individuals intending to completed the course need access to an occupational health clinic.

    What qualification will I receive?

    A Certificate of Competence in Occupational Vision Screening, enabling the holder to perform and or manage occupational vision screening tests results in occupational health contexts.
