Occupational Vision Screening Course

An 80-hour competency course by Eduplex Training Institute and Education for Health Africa, for professionals who perform, interpret, and manage vision screening in occupational health settings.

Purpose

This competency course in occupational vision screening is hosted by Eduplex Training Institute (ETI), in collaboration with Education for Health Africa (EFHA). This Occupational Vision Screening course is designed for healthcare professionals and assistants responsible for performing vision screening tests in the occupational workplace.

It aims to build competence in conducting safe and quality-assured occupational vision screening tests aligned with SAQA Unit Standard 116505.

Training Available

Blended training

Online theory sessions with a one-day practical session and examination hosted in Queenswood, Pretoria, Gauteng.

Onsite training

Online pre-reading theory and a three-day onsite, in-person training in Queenswood, Pretoria, Gauteng.

Entry Requirements

Vision Screening Practitioner

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 or higher
  • Registration with relevant council (HPCSA / SANC / SAMA)
  • Access to an occupational health clinic

Assistant Vision Screener

  • Minimum: Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
  • Recommended: experience in an occupational health setting and clinic access

Learning Outcomes

Vision Screening Practitioner

  • Perform vision screening equipment quality assurance and quality control tasks
  • Prepare for and conduct a vision test
  • Evaluate the validity of the vision test results
  • Interpret the vision screening test results
  • Record and report the vision screening test results
  • Manage the vision screening results

Assistant Vision Screener

  • Perform vision screening equipment quality assurance and quality control tasks
  • Prepare for and conduct a vision screening test
  • Evaluate the validity of the vision screening test results

Certification

On successful completion, participants receive a Certificate of Competence in Occupational Vision Screening.

This course is intended for occupational health nurse practitioners, other healthcare professionals, and assistants responsible for performing occupational vision screening tests in the workplace.

How Long Will Study Take?

The overall course is 80 hours long, combining theoretical training and practical vision screening skills application — including 21 hours of workplace assignments that must be completed to pass.

What qualification will I receive?

A Certificate of Competence in Occupational Vision Screening, enabling the holder to perform and/or manage occupational vision screening test results in occupational health contexts.

What are the entry requirements?

Vision Screening Practitioner: professional registration with SANC, HPCSA or SAMA; access to an occupational health clinic.

Assistant Vision Screener: Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 or higher; access to an occupational health clinic.
